Kathmandu, Nepal: While Nepal’s major airports such as the Tribhuvan International Airport, the country’s major international airport, produced a staggering revenue of NPR 12.86 billion in the fiscal year 2080/81, Lamidanda Airport in Khotang generated a meager revenue of NPR 474 only. While Tribhuvan International Airport remains the primary international gateway of the country, Lamidanda’s earnings paint a picture of the existing gaps within the aviation industry.
As for other airports, the performance was not as impressive as they generated lesser revenue than their expected income, the Pokhara International Airport generated Rs. 349.3 million while the Gautam Buddha International Airport generated Rs. 211. 3 million respectively. Lamidanda’s revenue is very low and other regional airports which include Doti and Rumjatar are also realizing low revenues.
This means that the low income generated by Lamidanda Airport raises questions on the sustainability of its operations and the future development of the airport. The variation in revenue collection between the airports shows the importance of proper investment and expansion on facilities in order to improve the quality of air travel services in the remote areas.
It is important for Nepal to further the development of the aviation sector and to overcome the problems of secondary airports such as Lamidanda to ensure that the sector is well distributed and sustainable across the country.
