Kathmandu,Nepal: In a bid to maximize the potential of Nepal's two key international airports—Gautam Buddha International Airport (GBIA) and Pokhara Regional International Airport (PRIA)—the government has initiated a comprehensive action plan to attract regular international flights. Despite being operational for over a year, both airports have struggled to maintain consistent international traffic.
The action plan, approved by the Cabinet on August 12, introduces a range of incentives to entice airlines to operate more flights from these airports. The Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC) has announced a significant reduction in aviation fuel prices, cutting the cost by $100 per kiloliter, effective from August 17. This move is expected to make operating out of GBIA and PRIA more economically viable for airlines.
Additionally, the government is offering concessions on air tickets, ground handling, and other operational costs, valid until August 2026. These measures are part of a broader strategy to fully utilize both airports, which were designated as national pride projects.
Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has taken a personal interest in the initiative, leading discussions with relevant ministries and aviation stakeholders. He has urged officials to prioritize the operationalization of GBIA and PRIA, emphasizing the need to reduce congestion at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu.
In line with these efforts, the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) has granted Thai AirAsia permission to operate regular flights between Thailand and Nepal, with services starting from September 20 at GBIA. Additionally, Kuwait's Jazeera Airlines is set to resume operations at GBIA from September 25, following a 10-month hiatus.
The push to enhance air connectivity is also aimed at addressing broader issues in Nepal's aviation sector, including lifting the European Union's ban on Nepalese airlines. During a meeting with airline operators, Prime Minister Oli called for a focus on improving air safety and resolving existing challenges within the sector.
These initiatives mark a significant step forward in the government's efforts to fully activate Nepal's new international airports, boosting tourism and economic growth in the region.
