Riyadh Air has signed a preliminary cooperation agreement with Delta Air Lines Inc. as it prepares for its launch next year. This partnership will enable the Saudi Arabian startup to establish a strong global presence by connecting with Delta's extensive network in the US.

The agreement outlines plans for a marketing collaboration, allowing both airlines to book customers on each other's flights. Delta will become Riyadh Air's exclusive partner airline in the US. This marks Delta’s first partnership with a Gulf carrier, a significant move after previously passing on such opportunities.

"We were looking for a partner with substantial economic and operational independence," said Delta CEO Ed Bastian.

Pending regulatory approvals, the cooperation will help both airlines expand into regions where they currently lack partnerships. The agreement may also extend to areas such as maintenance, repair, and overhaul work, ground handling, and training.

Future plans include exploring a joint venture to coordinate routes and flight times, enhancing the partnership's scope. Riyadh Air, owned by the Saudi Public Investment Fund, aims to commence operations mid-next year, targeting market share from established Gulf carriers like Emirates and Qatar Airways.

Riyadh Air's CEO, Tony Douglas, emphasized the importance of global connectivity to support Saudi Arabia's tourism and economic diversification goals. The airline has already secured partnerships in the Far East and is now focusing on establishing a robust network in North America.
