Singapore Airlines (SIA) and Cathay Pacific Airways have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly advance sustainability initiatives in the Asia-Pacific region, focusing on sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and eco-friendly practices.

Pioneering Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)

The collaboration aims to accelerate the adoption of SAF, a pivotal element for reducing carbon emissions in aviation. SIA and Cathay Pacific will advocate for supportive policies, raise public awareness, and promote a global framework for transparent and verifiable emission reductions from SAF use. The airlines will also explore joint procurement opportunities to boost SAF production and adoption across the industry.

Sharing Best Practices for Sustainability

The partnership extends beyond fuel initiatives. SIA and Cathay Pacific will exchange best practices to reduce single-use plastics, minimize waste, and enhance energy efficiency in ground and cargo operations. This knowledge sharing is intended to improve sustainability performance and speed up the implementation of eco-friendly solutions.

Commitment to Net Zero by 2050

Both airlines are committed to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050. Cathay Pacific was among the first Asian carriers to target 10% SAF usage by 2030. Recently, SIA signed an agreement with Neste for 1,000 tons of locally produced SAF at Singapore’s Changi Airport.

Leadership Comments

Goh Choon Phong, CEO of Singapore Airlines, emphasized the importance of the partnership: "Our collaboration with Cathay Pacific signifies our mutual ambition to enhance sustainability in the Asia-Pacific region. Together, we are laying the foundation for a more sustainable aviation industry, ensuring future generations can continue to benefit from air travel."

By working together, SIA and Cathay Pacific are setting a new standard for sustainability in aviation, driving the industry towards a greener and more sustainable future.
