New Delhi, India : SpiceJet is set to reinstate 10 of its grounded aircraft, prominently featuring four Boeing 737 MAX 8 planes, by mid-April 2025. This strategic move is part of the airline's broader recovery plan aimed at enhancing operational capabilities and expanding its fleet size.
The airline currently operates 28 aircraft and has been actively working to address its financial and operational hurdles. Since October 2024, SpiceJet has successfully added 10 new planes to its fleet, which includes three previously grounded units and seven leased aircraft. The revival of the Boeing 737 MAX fleet is expected to bolster its service offerings, even as some aircraft are returned to lessors during this period.
SpiceJet's Chairman and Managing Director, Ajay Singh, highlighted the significance of this initiative, stating, “Our plan to bring 10 aircraft back into service by mid-April reflects SpiceJet’s unwavering commitment to growth and operational excellence.” The airline has also introduced over 60 new flights in the last three months, further improving connectivity for passengers.
In a critical partnership, SpiceJet recently engaged with StandardAero Inc., a leading U.S.-based engine repair company, to facilitate the restoration of its grounded Boeing 737 MAX fleet. This collaboration follows successful previous agreements with CFM International, the manufacturer of the LEAP-1B engines used in these aircraft.
Despite facing challenges reflected in a recent drop in stock prices and operational performance, SpiceJet remains focused on recovery. The airline's strategy includes resolving disputes with major lessors and enhancing passenger experience through improved services.
In addition to fleet expansion efforts, SpiceJet is also launching dedicated flights to Prayagraj for the Maha Kumbh Mela 2025, marking its first-ever air connectivity to this significant religious event. This initiative aims to accommodate millions of pilgrims traveling for one of the world's largest religious gatherings.
