Kathmandu,Nepal: In a significant disruption to Sunday morning air travel, several major airports across Nepal's Terai region have suspended operations due to severely limited visibility, leaving countless travelers stranded.
The Tribhuvan International Airport Authority reports that key airports including Dhangadhi, Nepalgunj, Bhairahawa, Simara, Janakpur, and Biratnagar have been forced to halt all flights as thick fog blankets the region, making safe takeoffs and landings impossible.
There's a glimmer of hope as conditions show signs of improvement at Tumlingtar, Biratnagar, Janakpur, and Nepalgunj airports, where visibility is gradually getting better. Meanwhile, airports in Bhadrapur, Bharatpur, Pokhara, and Surkhet have announced they expect to resume flights shortly as weather conditions improve.
"Safety comes first, and we're closely monitoring the situation," said an airport official who requested anonymity. "We understand this is frustrating for passengers, especially those traveling for urgent matters, but we can only resume operations when it's absolutely safe to do so."
Local travelers, many of whom had planned important business meetings or family gatherings, are now faced with uncertain wait times. Airport authorities are advising passengers to stay in touch with their airlines for the latest flight updates.
