New Delhi, India: Air India, one of India’s leading global airlines, has announced a significant expansion of its fleet with an order for 100 additional Airbus aircraft. This includes 10 widebody A350s and 90 narrowbody A320 Family aircraft, including the A321neo. The latest order adds to the airline's previously confirmed purchase of 470 aircraft from Airbus and Boeing in 2023, highlighting its ambitious growth plans.
With this new order, Air India’s total procurement from Airbus in 2023 increases from 250 to 350 aircraft, comprising 50 A350s and 300 A320 Family aircraft. The airline has also partnered with Airbus to implement Flight Hour Services-Component (FHS-C) to maintain its growing A350 fleet, ensuring optimal reliability and performance through integrated engineering and component services.
Strategic Expansion for Global Connectivity
Natarajan Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons and Air India, emphasized the strategic importance of the fleet expansion:
"With India’s passenger growth outpacing global trends, improving infrastructure, and an increasingly aspirational young population, these additional 100 aircraft will support Air India’s mission to become a world-class airline connecting India to every corner of the world."
Guillaume Faury, CEO of Airbus, echoed these sentiments, praising India’s aviation growth:
"We are delighted to deepen our partnership with Air India through this additional order. Airbus is committed to supporting Air India’s transformation under the Tata Group’s leadership."
Modern Fleet to Elevate Operations
Air India is the first Indian airline to operate the Airbus A350, powered by Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engines, known for fuel efficiency, passenger comfort, and long-range capabilities. These aircraft currently serve long-haul routes such as Delhi to London and New York.
For domestic and short-haul operations, the A320 Family, powered by CFM LEAP 1-A engines, remains the backbone of Air India’s operations, offering exceptional flight economics and a premium travel experience for millions of passengers.
Transforming Indian Aviation
With the addition of 100 aircraft, Air India now awaits 344 deliveries from Airbus, alongside 185 aircraft yet to be received from Boeing. This growth aligns with Air India’s “Vihaan.AI” transformation plan under Tata Group leadership, aiming to re-establish its status as a global aviation leader.
By leveraging advanced aircraft and comprehensive maintenance strategies, Air India is poised to enhance its operational efficiency and expand its global network, making significant strides toward becoming a world-class airline.
