New Delhi,India: In a bold projection underscoring India’s rapid rise in global aviation, Union Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu announced that the country will need 200 new airports and 4,000 additional aircraft within the next two decades. Currently home to 157 airports and a fleet of 800 aircraft, India’s infrastructure will see a seismic expansion to support its position as one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets.

“India's aviation sector is experiencing unprecedented growth, and to keep pace, we need to build not only airports but thriving hubs for commerce and job creation,” Naidu said, inaugurating Airbus India’s state-of-the-art pilot training headquarters in New Delhi. He highlighted that passenger traffic is expected to double within five years, climbing sharply from last year’s 220 million passengers. This surge is set to transform airports into economic powerhouses, driving infrastructure, trade, and employment.

With 1,200 aircraft already on order, Naidu emphasized the critical need for enhanced training facilities as demand for skilled pilots rises. The new Airbus facility, equipped with cutting-edge A320neo simulators, will prepare pilots to meet the demands of complex flight environments, reinforcing India’s goal to deliver world-class aviation standards.

Naidu also signaled plans for domestic aircraft production, as the government aims to reduce dependency on imports and streamline business regulations in the sector.
