Singapore Changi Airport has fully operationalized a passport-less immigration system across all terminals, offering Singaporeans, permanent residents, and long-term pass holders faster clearance using only biometric verification. Since its launch on September 30, over 1.5 million travelers have used the new system, cutting clearance times by 60%—from an average of 25 seconds to just 10 seconds per person.
While foreign visitors are still required to show a passport upon arrival, they can leave Singapore through the biometric system as their details are captured at entry. Children under six remain ineligible due to developing biometric features.
Alan Koo, Singapore’s Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) senior assistant commissioner, highlighted that the automated system allows officers to focus on more specialized roles, such as interviewing and profiling, thereby enhancing overall security and efficiency at one of the world’s busiest airports.
