New Delhi,India: Air India has resumed its Mumbai-Vijayawada service after nearly four years, addressing a longstanding demand from local communities and businesses. The route, initially launched with thrice-weekly flights in 2018, faced challenges amid political changes and the pandemic, leading to its suspension.

The decision to restart daily flights follows a viability study and renewed demand post-2024 elections. The inaugural flight, fully booked, departed Vijayawada at 7:10 pm on Saturday, marking a significant moment for connectivity in the region. The Airbus A320 aircraft, accommodating 185 passengers, now operates daily between Mumbai and Vijayawada.

Vijayawada MPs Kesineni Sivanath (Chinni) and Vallabhaneni Balashowry welcomed the flight's arrival, emphasizing its potential to boost international connectivity as Amaravati develops as the state's capital. MPs expressed optimism about Vijayawada becoming a hub for domestic and international flights, with plans underway for an international terminal.

AP Chambers president Potluri Bhaskar Rao hailed the service as a "game changer" for local businesses and urged the Civil Aviation ministry to consider expanding direct flights to cities like Ahmedabad, Raipur, Jaipur, and Goa, further enhancing Vijayawada's connectivity.
